Pesticide Reduction
Wildsight is committed to reducing pesticide exposure in our communities and surrounding environment. We are an active member of the Pesticide Free Columbia Basin Coalition. The coalition is dedicated to the phase-out of non-essential, cosmetic chemical pesticides in the Columbia Basin. We work closely with the Canadian Cancer Society on all municipal initiatives and have joined 19 environmental and health organizations across the province in calling for a provincial ban of cosmetic pesticides. In a coordinated effort between the communities of Invermere, Golden, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie, Rossland and Nelson, the goal of the Pesticide Free Columbia Basin coalition is to create a healthier environment and healthier communities for our citizens. We continue to call on our local governments to pass municipal bylaws to protect citizens and the environment from these harmful substances. Wildsight joined 19 health and environmental organizations across BC this winter (2010) to call upon the provincial government to enact legislation banning the sale of cosmetic pesticides.
We are committed to informing communities about alternative solutions to pesticides. Amongst the list of events we have hosted are Healthy Lawn and Garden Fairs, West Coast Environmental Law speakers and Carole Rubin, author of "Hot To Get Your Lawn Off Drugs". To accompany our many community events, Wildsight's "Healthy Lawn and Garden" brochure provides useful information on going pesticide-free in your lawns and gardens. Pesticide-free lawn signs and stickers are also available to show your support.
