Second workshop added: Practical and Effective Solar Heating

Solstice date spurred by overwhelming demand for cheap and cheerful heating solutions

So many people registered for Practical and Effective Solar Heating on June 19 that organizers have added a second date, June 21, which coincidentally is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in terms of daylight.

The Monday workshop will take place at the Kimberley Campus of the College of the Rockies between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The price is $179 + GST. Spaces are still available.

Practical and Effective Solar Heating features Tang Lee, a professor of architecture at the University of Calgary. Lee has designed Canadian solar heating systems since 1975.

“Our valley gets lots of winter sun,” said Kevin Brown, Wildsight’s organizer for the event. “Participants will learn to harness it inexpensively and save up to 70 per cent on heating bills.”

Brown said the workshop will show how to introduce solar heating into your existing home using solar collectors, sunspaces and a tight building envelope. Participants will also get hands-on training in F-Chart. “F-Chart is user-friendly software that helps people optimize solar thermal systems,” said Brown. “It’s a vital tool for builders and designers.”

Wildsight is partnering with College of the Rockies to host the workshop, and Golden Timber Frames is sponsoring the event by providing funds for the speaking fee.

“It’s great to see such a good response to the workshop,” Brown said. “The range of qualifications and experience of the participants signed up so far is inspiring, and Tang Lee’s information is key to the sustainable economic development of our region.”

Brown said that entry to the workshop is not restricted, but participants will benefit if they have knowledge of construction.
