Open today: the Love it Wildly Lawn and Garden photo contest
Great prizes for the prettiest, pesticide-free pictures of Kimberley/Cranbrook yards
Who says a pesticide-free lawn and garden looks anything less than gorgeous? Not the Kimberley/Cranbrook branch of Wildsight.
The group is hosting a Love it Wildly Lawn and Garden photo contest this summer, and pictures of terrific, non-toxic landscapes will be voted on by the public until September 15, 2010. Prizes include a RainXchange™ rain barrel.
“The Love it Wildly photo contest will show that pesticide-free yards can be just as lovely as yards that rely on chemicals,” said Robyn Duncan with Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook. “You could call it a natural beauty contest for the green-thumb set.”
There are two categories in the contest—Lawn and Garden—and only one rule: the area cannot have had pesticides used on it this year. The photos will be posted online at www.Wildsight.ca/LoveItWildly and then voted for by the public. “We’re also going to have photos displayed at coffee shops in both Kimberley and Cranbrook so people can vote on them there,” Duncan said.
So far, Invermere and Kimberley have enacted cosmetic pesticide bylaws, Fernie has passed one that will come into effect in 2011 and Golden is moving towards one. A community pesticide-free initiative is also underway in Cranbrook. “So many gardeners are creating beautiful spaces without using pesticides—we appreciate their talents and dedication to a safer environment,” Duncan said.
Love it Wildly runs from June 30 to September 15, 2010. It’s open to residents of Kimberley, Cranbrook and surrounding areas and its prizes—gift certificates, a rain barrel and other green stuff—will attract avid gardeners like a feeder attracts birds.
