Great prizes for the prettiest, pesticide-free pictures of Kimberley/Cranbrook yards

Cranbrook and Kimberley, B.C. — There’s just one week left to submit your photos for the Love It Wildly Lawn and Garden Photo Contest! Winning a 75 gallon rain barrel could be as easy as taking a picture of your pesticide-free lawn or garden.

“The Love it Wildly photo contest will show that pesticide-free yards can be just as lovely as yards that rely on chemicals,” said Robyn Duncan with Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook. “You could call it a natural beauty contest for the green-thumb set.”

There is only one rule: the area cannot have had pesticides used on it this year. The winning photos will be chosen by the public with their first appearance at the Kimberley Fall Fair on September 25, 2010. Photos can be entered online at www.wildsight.ca/loveitwildy, but remember they have to be in before September 15!

Across the Columbia Basin many communities are working towards becoming pesticide-free. Kimberley, Invermere and Nelson all have cosmetic bylaws in place and Fernie’s bylaw will take effect in 2011. Revelstoke City Council recently voted unanimously to support a cosmetic bylaw this August and there is also strong movement in Golden, Cranbrook and Castlegar. “So many gardeners are creating beautiful spaces without using pesticides—we appreciate their talents and dedication to a safer environment,” Duncan said.

Love it Wildly closes September 15, 2010. It’s open to residents of Kimberley, Cranbrook and surrounding areas.
