The history of Reflection Lake revealed
There was a time, many years ago, when Reflection Lake was a centrepiece of activity for the town. There were boat and tea houses built along its shores, and both winter and summer activities at “Phantom Lake,” as it was once called, were common.
The Golden Memories book tells stories about how the lake was used for nighttime skating in the winter. They would have two or three bonfires built on the shore and the children would skate close to the flames as coyotes would howl in the background. The Golden Curling Club played matches on the lake as early as 1894. During the summer, the lake was used as a swimming hole. The “Boys Brigade Aquatic Sports” group would host competitions featuring canoe races, barrel races, greased pole and duck hunts.
