Golden goes after invasive weeds

The Town of Golden has initiated a pilot program to fight invasive species of weeds within the community. The Golden Community Weed Program is a partnership between the town and Wildsight and is designed to educate residents about how to identify these noxious weeks and to give advice about how to get rid of them.

There are many definitions of “invasive species.” Perhaps the best and most suitable is “a non-indigenous species (e.g. plants or animals) that adversely affect the habitats they invade, economically, environmentally or ecologically.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasive_species)

Summer is nearly over and now is the time when those invasive plants are forming seeds so that they can return next year, stronger and more plentiful than ever. Many species are pretty to look at but deadly to the environment, threatening bio-diversity, poisoning livestock, choking out the native plant population, degrading the scenic beauty of the landscape and reducing the quality of the water.
