Are you aged 14 to 18? Join Wildsight for a six-day guided wilderness adventure

School’s out and many kids are moving inside to play video games, surf the web and watch TV. Wildsight is offering Go Wild Youth Adventure hiking trips for youth aged 14 to 18 to help offset the trend.

“It’s important to provide young people with opportunities to connect with nature, and to create opportunities to get in shape, be inspired, develop leadership skills, and have safe, fun, wilderness adventures” said Dave Quinn, Wildsight’s Purcell program manager. “Go Wild provides these opportunities.”

Go Wild is a six-day backpacking trip into the Purcell Mountains. The cost is $375 and includes professional guides, great camp food and the use of gear like tents and sleeping bags. This year’s trip from August 20 to the 25, 2010.

“This is a fully-guided, fully-outfitted backcountry trip, geared specifically for this age group,” Quinn said, adding that no previous backpacking or hiking experience is required—“Although a good baseline level of fitness is a prerequisite, as participants will carry their own backpacks and camping gear.”

Now in its fourth year, Go Wild is designed to connect Kootenay youth to the wilderness paradise. “Along the way, we learn some history, some ecology and some vital skills like how to use maps and a compass, how to plan and cook good food in the wilderness, and how to travel safely in the mountains,” Quinn said. “Youth also develop their leadership skills by making decisions, leading their peers, living in a group, facing challenges and accomplishing goals.

“It’s a great opportunity and we are now taking bookings online here and over the phone to 250-427-9325.”
