CANADIAN PREMIERE: North America’s Largest Environmental Film Festival comes to Kimberley for Earth Day
Be prepared to be inspired as the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival on Tour makes its Canadian premiere at McKim Middle School on April 22nd at 7:00 pm as part of Kimberley’s Earth Day celebrations. Hosted by Wildsight, Wild & Scenic On Tour brings together a selection of films from the annual festival held every January in Nevada City, CA.
“The films featured in Wild & Scenic are really empowering and fun to watch because they are real life stories of real life people who are blazing trails towards more planet-friendly living,” says local tour coordinator Ingrid Liepa. “You’ll see such a range of personal creativity at play in the stories, not to mention a whole lot of courage, passion and vision around building more sustainable futures.”
Featured films for Kimberley include Greenhorns and Nature Propelled, along with a local Kimberley production: Lindsay Park Elementary School’s We’ve Got Worms, a BC Green Games award winning film.
In Greenhorns, young farmers are the unlikely poster children of a new zeitgeist. Find out how these bright 20- and 30-somethings are contributing and leading the way into a new world of agriculture, sustainability and economics.
As Seth Warren’s latest film, Nature Propelled features stunning and often daring footage, demonstrating unique connection between the elements, renewable energy, adventure sports, and practical ways that individuals can use these elements to power their lifestyles. It even features some white water paddling scenes filmed in the Kootenays!
The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003, and now tours over 90 cities across North America. The festival’s namesake is in celebration of achieving Wild & Scenic status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999. The 3-day event features over 125 award-winning films and welcomes over 80 guest speakers, celebrities, and activists who bring a human face to the environmental movement.
Proceeds of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Kimberley will go to support Wildsight’s local children and youth programs, which include Beyond Recycling and Footprints for the Future, along with local hosting of HSBC Clean Air Achievers and the High School Climate Challenge.
In addition to the film festival, Wildsight is coordinating an Earth Day marketplace with approximately 30 confirmed vendors and exhibits, including food and drink, and Kids Programs, too, so that parents can watch the films while kids aged 3 to 8 are looked after by ECE certified volunteers. Both the marketplace and kids programs are free. Please register in advance for child care by contacting kimcran@wildsight.ca or (250) 427-2535.
