BC Hydro supports Wildsight’s Beyond Recycling

Students go beyond the 3Rs to tackle the issues with insight

East Kootenay, B.C. — BC Hydro will fund Wildsight’s Beyond Recycling program for the next three years, allowing the program to continue in East Kootenay schools. It’s good news for teachers and students, as limited funding has left some classes without access to the program.
Beyond Recycling is a year-long curriculum for students in Grades 5 to 7. It is delivered by educators who visit the classroom once a week with slideshows, costumes, movies and games that make learning about serious issues fun.
“The curriculum inspires and empowers young people to lead the way in making positive environmental and behavioral changes,” said program coordinator Dawn Deydey. “It gives them tools to assess how they use resources and how they could use them more wisely.”
BC Hydro has been supporting the program in the East Kootenay since 2008. In 2009, students in Cranbrook and Fernie schools nominated Beyond Recycling for a BC Hydro Community Champion Award, which it won.  It has also been offered in Jaffray, Creston, Kimberley and Invermere classrooms.
“BC Hydro is pleased to support Wildsight’s Beyond Recycling program with a $15,000 contribution over three years,” says Diane Tammen, Community Relations Manager for BC Hydro. “The program teaches youth valuable conservation stewardship skills which they will be able to use now, and throughout their adult lives. The Beyond Recycling program supports BC Hydro’s objective to provide support for initiatives that involve environmental sustainability and foster a conservation culture in BC and aligns with the province’s Clean Energy Act.”
“It’s crucial to encourage students to think ‘beyond’ simply recycling,” Deydey said. “Students are challenged to look critically at the impact of their schools, homes and lifestyles, and to take effective and positive environmental action. We’re grateful to BC Hydro for helping us show young people how to lead the way to a more sustainable future.”
