Conservation groups and outdoor enthusiasts are getting behind legislation that is being drafted to make B.C. off-road vehicle (ORV) users get a licence.
According to the Coalition for Licensing and Registration of ORVs (CLRORV), B.C. is the only province in Canada and the last jurisdiction in North America, to have no regulations for ORVs.
As a result, many believe areas in the province are being exploited by irresponsible ORV users causing irreparable damage.
“New, unpermitted, and poorly-designed ORV routes are appearing off the end of nearly every Forest Service Road in the district,” said Dave Quinn, environmental group Wildsight’s Purcell program manager. “These routes are tearing through into critical grizzly, mountain caribou, and other ungulate habitats.” Quinn admits that most people are not responsible for this damage.
