Celebrating Earth Day & Earth Week In Kimberley
For Immediate Release
The daffodils are coming up! The birds are back! The crocuses are popping up all over the hills! What better time of year than Spring to celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22nd and the days before and after it are a natural time to appreciate Mother Nature and her awesome powers to inspire, to renew, to keep us refreshed and relaxed all year long.
In Kimberley, local schools, community organizations and businesses will be doing a range of special activities to recognize “Earth Week”. On April 22nd, you’ll find many of them at the Earth Day Community Marketplace and Celebration from 6 pm – 9 pm at McKim Middle School, which makes it a good time to check out earth friendly activities here in town. You can also join the Kimberley Nature Park Society for a Spring Wild Flower Hike, 10 am on April 22 at Riverside Campground.
Since the historic first Earth Day celebration in 1970, April 22nd has become a time for people around the world to gather and renew their commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner planet. Now involving over half a billion people, Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities.
This year Kimberley will once again embrace the opportunity to teach our kids, our parents and our friends a little more about future sustainability in Kimberley, the Columbia Basin and the world. What steps have you taken to conserve energy, reduce waste, shop and garden more sustainability, save water and use alternative modes of transportation? Here are a few suggestions: do your laundry in cold water, and then hang in the sun to dry – there is nothing better than sun dried sheets! Take advantage of the weather and bike or meander to work, check out Wildsight’s Car Share program, or think about taking an exciting new five-week course in Voluntary Simplicity starting at the College on April 27th.
There are going to be a lot of fun things to do and check out for Earth Day celebrations next week. Join in by doing your part to help Kimberley be an environmentally sustainable city.
