Climate Change Experts Coming to Kimberley

Local residents will soon have a unique opportunity to learn more about climate change in Kimberley from two Canadian experts who will be visiting the area.  The experts will be speaking at an evening workshop hosted by Kimberley’s Climate Adaptation Project on October 28th.

The workshop program includes presentation of a recently completed climate change analysis for Kimberley by Trevor Murdock.  He is part of the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium, an internationally recognized research team based at the University of Victoria.

According to Murdock, “my work helps to uncover aspects of community planning where the importance of climate might be easily overlooked but is actually an important consideration for future planning.”

Murdock’s technical focus includes preparing future climate change scenarios and downscaling them to a regional level.  He also has a keen interest in how decision-makers, planners, engineers, architects and others involved in community planning intend to adapt to climate change.

Stewart Cohen, a Canadian pioneer in translating climate impacts into effective planning for adaptation, will be speaking about why planning for adaptation is important.

Cohen has been examining climate change impacts and adaptation for over 25 years, and is a strong supporter of Kimberley’s climate adaptation project.  He has done case studies on various regions in Canada, including the Okanagan and Metro Vancouver in BC, and was one of the authors for the impacts volume of the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th Assessment Report.

“This project is based on the goals of ‘Learn, Share and Plan’, so the workshop marks a significant opportunity for members of the community to find out more about the future changes we might be seeing here in Kimberley and also share what that means for them”, says project Steering Committee member Kent Goodwin.

All members of the community are invited to attend this free workshop, which takes place at Centennial Hall on Tuesday October 28th.  Doors open at 6:30 pm and the evening program begins at 7:00 pm sharp.
