Renowned Author Robert Sandford Speaking in Cranbrook and Kimberley

One of Western Canada’s most impassioned and articulate defenders of preserving the natural beauty of our Rocky Mountain communities is visiting Cranbrook and Kimberley to discuss his latest book, The Weekender Effect: Hyper-development in Mountain Towns.

Bob Sandford has written more than 20 books on the natural and human history of the Canadian West and his experience in the international community is impressive. Sandford began his work with UN-linked initiatives as Chair of the United Nations International Year of Mountains in 2002. Bob was also chair of the United Nations International Year of Fresh Water and Wonder of Water Initiative in Canada in 2003-2004. These celebrations focused on the growing importance of water to ecological and cultural heritage in Canada. He is currently the Canadian Chair of the United Nations International “Water for Life” Decade, and is the only Canadian to sit on the Advisory Committee for the prestigious Rosenberg International Forum on Water Policy.

In his new book, Sandford traces the history of humanity’s connection to their sense of place and home, its geography, its history and how one’s personal history merges with the larger history of a community and region. He describes how one’s life is reflected in where they live, and vice versa.  “Sense of place is only established when a relationship to a specific landscape or culture captures you and makes you a local by choice.”

However, this special sense of place that the Rockies holds for us is threatened, as we all know.  “Current population movement …resembles an invasion”, says Sandford. Bob is speaking of his hometown of Canmore, but has a warning for other mountain communities in the beginning stages of rapid development, to not let the character of their community get lost forever.

“We are thrilled to have Bob Sandford back in Cranbrook”, said one of the organizers, Barb O’Neil. “With the municipal elections in full swing, his thoughts and observations on what we need to do – and think about – are timely”.

Bob Sandford will be speaking at the McKim Middle School in Kimberley on Wednesday, October 29 at 7 p.m. and at the Prestige Inn, Cranbrook on Thursday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.  This event is Sponsored by Wildsight, Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook, Lotus Books, Joseph Creek Community Action Team, and the Cranbrook Community Forest Society.
