Action Alert Jumbo Blockade
A blockade has been set up at KM 53 of the Horsethief Creek Forest Service Road in order to stop the installation of a surface lift on Farnham Glacier and to force the Government of British Columbia to honour their commitment to transparency in the Jumbo Resort Issue. The surface lift is a backdoor attempt to make it appear that construction on the Jumbo Glacier Resort Proposal has begun. This blockade will remain in place until such time as the proposal to install the lift is halted and the questionable tenure is pulled. Jumbo Glacier resort has not received First Nations approval, nor has it received the approval of the Regional District of East Kootenay.
If you can help support this peaceful action, please contact Judy Burns at radio2judy@yahoo.ca or at 250 342-6334 to get more information and to schedule you in. We need people to sign up for day shifts from 9:00 to 6:00 or overnight shifts from 5:00pm to 3:00 pm. This will ensure that the blockade is in effect 24 hours a day.
The Blockade Camp is located at Km 53 on the Farnham Creek leg of the Horsethief Creek Forest Service Road in a very picturesque spot.
The Horsethief Creek Forest service road is accessed off of the Westside road between Invermere (Wilmer) and Radium. Go to Invermere; turn toward Panorama, then at the first bridge turn right to Wilmer. Drive through Wilmer past the Delphine Creek Lodge and follow the West Side Road to the Four Corners intersection. Turn Left onto the Horsethief Creek Road (there is a forestry sign indicating the correct turn). Be sure to stay to the right at approx. Km 32. At approximately Km 41.5 or 42.5 angle off left onto the Farnham Creek Road (there is a large sign posted that reads "Hazardous Conditions"). You will know you are on the correct road if you pass an orange gate soon after turning up the road. We are camped at the end of the road at approx. Km 52/53.
Please ensure that you bring your own food, shelter, and cooking gear. Please be prepared for mountain weather - including very hot and very cold weather. Finally, please plan on hiking either the day before or after your shift, or only if there are at least 3 other people in camp. It is important that there be enough people in camp at all times for the blockade to be effective and safe.
For media enquiries and communications please contact Dave Quinn at daveq@wildsight.ca or at 250 427-8878.
We look forward to seeing you!
