Kimberley's Best Stack of Firewood Contest
If you think you have a great stack of firewood, or are working on getting yours ready for next winter, we would like to know about it. The efficiency and convenience of your wood-heating system depend a lot on the quality of the fuel wood you burn.
Now is a great time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors by cutting and splitting firewood. Generally speaking, the largest piece of wood for the new, advanced stoves should be no more than about 15 cm (6 in.) across. Stack your wood outside. It dries best if kept off the ground and covered. Allow room for the air to flow under the stack and to circulate between the pieces. During the summer, as warm breezes flow through the stacks and carry away the water, the moisture content of the wood falls to about 20 percent – as opposed to 35 -50% moisture from fresh cut wood. One sign of dry wood is checks or cracks in the ends of the pieces. Properly dried firewood is darker on the ends than freshly cut wood and weighs much less. This wood will ignite readily, flame easily and burn more efficiently with much less smoke next heating season.
So let us know if you have a great stack of wood and you could win a free chimney cleaning and wood stove maintenance check. Just send a photo to woodstoveexchange@wildsight.ca or drop one off at the Wildsight office in Kimberley. For more details, contact our Wood Stove Exchange Coordinator, Erna Jensen-Shill at (250)427-0847. Contest closes June 30th.
