Put the Car in the Garage, Honey. It's Clean Air Day!

Kimberely, B.C. — Get ready to turn off the truck, jump on a bike, ride the bus, share a ride with a friend, or simply lace up the sneakers and walk to where you’re going. This year’s Clean Air Day is Wednesday June 4th, and it’s almost here!

Held annually on the first Wednesday of every June, Clean Air Day is all about raising awareness about how to stop climate change and reduce pollution from vehicles ¬– by ridesharing, public transit, or simply riding a bike.

“Clean air and our reliable Kootenay climate are easy things to take for granted,” says Wildsight’s Clean Air Coordinator Ingrid Liepa. “You don’t always know what you have until it’s gone. That’s why protecting our air is so important.”

This Clean Air Day, the Cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley, as well as the Regional District of East Kootenay will be offering free fares on their public transit systems. Liepa believes this step demonstrates valuable initiative towards ensuring our air stays clean.

“These governments have shown impressive leadership in this effort,” says Liepa. “Thanks to them, it’s never been easier to jump on the bus and try out some environmentally friendly transportation.”

Liepa also suggests citizens interesting in making a difference on Clear Air Day, or any day of the year, check out ride sharing through websites such as kootenayrideshare.com or fernierideboard.com.

“Every little bit counts when we do what we can to protect our environment and our air,” says Liepa. “After all, if we don’t look after them, who will?”
