Wildsight Congratulates Cranbrook's Pledge to Become Carbon Neutral

Partnership of Districts against Climate Change ‘Precedent Setting’

Cranbrook, B.C. — For those about to rock climate change solutions, Wildsight salutes you.

Wildsight would like to extend congratulations to the City of Cranbrook for signing onto the B.C. Climate Action Charter, and to the East Kootenay, Central Kootenay, and Kootenay Boundary Regional Districts for working together in their funding application to support carbon neutral initiatives.

To have this many municipal leaders working together on the issue of carbon emissions is truly precedent setting in Canada, says Megan Walsh, Wildsight’s Climate Change for the Kootenays Program Manger. It is incredible to see this coordinated effort that will positively affect every community member.

Local governments that sign the B.C. Climate Action Charter pledge to become carbon neutral by 2012. As well, they measure and report on their community’s greenhouse gas emissions profile, and work to create compact, more energy efficient communities.

To date, 113 municipalities have signed on to the B.C. Climate Action Charter.

Wildsight believes these communities realize their decision will save money and energy by slowly phasing in changes, rather than making hurried adaptations when the affects of climate change become more drastic.

It’s really encouraging to know that Cranbrook, the Districts, and other municipalities have the foresight to make these small changes that will save energy and money as well as reduce pollution, says Walsh. That’s a great thing now, and a great thing for the future.
