Car and truck sharing - calculate your cost
You can enter details of your car or truck use in the form below to calculate how much it would cost with a Kimberley Carshare vehicle. You can enter one to four different trips per month, with any number of repeats for each trip. Trip time includes the entire time that you have use of a vehicle for, not just travel time, and can be entered in 0.25 hour increments.
You can see a calculated example of car or truck use cost below.
Your monthly trips:
(Plus HST)
For example, if you use a vehicle six times a month (one 48-hour weekend, one 10-hour day and four 2-hour trips) and drive 400km in total, you’ll pay the following:
| Car use | Truck use | |
| Monthly fee | $35 | $35 |
| Hourly fees | $57 | $57 |
| Per kilometer fees | $100 | $144 |
| Total (monthly) | $192 | $242 |
| Total (annually) | $2304 | $2904 |
If you bought a fuel efficient used car, at a cost of $8000, over the next three years you'd pay about $1100 per year for full insurance coverage, about $500 per year for financing, and lose about $900 per year due to depreciation. On top of those fixed costs, you'll also pay about $0.08/km for gas and about $0.07/km for maintenance, repairs, and tires. Your total cost for usage above would be about $3220 or $900 more than the car share cost.
If you bought a used 1/2 ton truck, at a cost of $10,000, over the next three years you'd pay about $1400 per year for full insurance coverage, about $600 per year for financing, and lose about $1150 per year due to depreciation. You'll also pay about $0.16/km for gas and about $0.10/km for maintenance, repairs, and tires. Your total cost for usage above would be about $4400 or $1500 more than the truck share cost.
Not only do you save a significant amount of money by sharing a vehicle if you don't need one every day, but you also save yourself the time and hassle involved in owning and maintaining a vehicle. If you drive less than 400km per month, you'll save even more compared to the cost of owning.
