Branch members have provided leadership and ongoing support to keep Jumbo wild. We have also been active in reviewing the Olympic training facility proposal for Farnham glacier in an attempt to minimize environmental impacts. The branch is working to protect Columbia Lake Park from bisection to accommodate a resort scheme that threatens wildife and plant communities in both the park and the East Columbia Lake Wildlife Management Area.
Branch members have been key participants in the now complete, Lake Windermere Project and continue to provide support in ensuring the ecological integrity of Lake Windermere through the Lake Windermere Ambassadors.
The Invermere Branch is also actively involved in the Pesticide Free Columbia Basin initiative, and played a key role in establishing Invermere as the first community in the East Kootenay to pass a cosmetic pesticide bylaw.
Canadian Forest Products (Canfor) and British Columbia Timber Sales (BCTS) are in the process of developing new sustainable forest-management practices in the Invermere Timber Supply Area. They have convened a public advisory forum to analyze environmental, social and economic issues related to eventual Forest Stewardship Council certification of Canfor and BCTS products and operations. Wildsight Invermere Branch has an environmental conservation seat at this forum.
