Wild Report: Fall 2010

Shoreline litter tally

Wildsight hosted the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup on September 18, 2010.

Volunteers collected 80 pounds of litter from 3.5 kilometres of Lake Windermere shoreline, including:

• 1,360 cigarette butts

• 73 food wrappers

• 47 pull tabs

• 37 straws

• 22 plastic bags

• Two 55-gallon drums

Golden weed program

The Town of Golden and Wildsight helped residents tackle invasive plants this summer. Organized weed pulls and a town-funded door-to-door education service meant hundreds of bags—thousands of pounds—of invasive plants like burdock, knapweed and tansy won’t spread next year. Residents called on a local plant expert to help them identify invasive plants and to teach them about non-chemical weed treatments.
