Dick Kalman, Kootenay Pass

dick_kalman_WEB.jpeg

Dick Kalman came to Canada from Hungary in 1948. He initially worked for CP Railway, and traversed the country from east to west. When he reached the Rocky Mountains, he fell in love twice: once with the mountains, and again with a beautiful lady named Barbara. In 1982, Dick and Barbara Retired to Creston, BC, and that’s “when the fun began.”

Dick’s favourite wild place is Kootenay Pass. If you’ve been there, you may have spotted this white-haired blue-eyed octogenarian leaving silent S turns in the
snow. Or perhaps you’ve seen his hand-drawn map indicating avalanche slopes
on the wall of the alpine hut.

Today, at 84, he continues to share his passion for the mountains. Keep an eye out for his tracks!
