Elk Valley Branch members continue to closely monitor coalbed methane activities. BP (British Petroleum) has committed $100,000,000 in the next five years to CBM exploration in the Crows Nest Pass Coalfields which includes all of the area between Fernie and the Alberta border and from north of Sparwood to the edge of the Flathead Valley. High gas prices will continue to stimulate CBM activity, which has devastated lesser landscapes in Alberta, Wyoming and elsewhere. We continue to press for a comprehensive environmental, social and economic impact study for the entire region.
BP in the Elk Valley: What's the Problem?
The branch hosted release of an analysis by economist Jim Johnson of local benefits that would flow from inclusion of part of B.C.’s Flathead Valley in Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Our Wild Walk parade was a successful celebration of our new Wildsight name. Two branch members sit on the City of Fernie’s pesticide reduction committee. The Branch participated in building a trail through the Morrissey cottonwood grove. We support Bear Aware, the Community Eco-Garden, and Advocates for Local Living.
A major local project of the Elk Valley Branch is the West Fernie Wetlands Enhancement Project.
