Education for Sustainable Living

Kids need to know about…

… how to make sustainable choices. And how to meet the challenges of climate change, waste and energy reduction. Grade 5, 6 and 7 students are the perfect age for new Wildsight educational programs in Education for Sustainable Living. They are creative and curious about their world and their place in it.

Beyond Recycling

Beyond Recycling is the first Education for Sustainable Living program. It is a year-long, one-lesson-a-week look at the nuts and bolts of waste reduction, energy-use reduction and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Wildsight facilitators (certified teachers or professional educators) present the material in ways that engage the strengths of this age group. There aren’t always easy answers so students are encouraged to think critically. They debate and they create.

Students are introduced to the concepts of eco-footprints, climate change, waste auditing and energy auditing.

Beyond Recycling encourages student-led solutions for living lightly.

Students become scientists, designers and emissaries for change in their communities. The program curriculum and manual of interactive lessons was developed by Wildsight to meet B.C. Ministry of Education learning outcomes for science and social studies for each grade level.

Through the program, students become aware of the threats to our life support system from climate change, pollution and habitat degradation. The are encouraged to embrace the idea of social responsibility.

Gradually, students learn how to find solutions to some of these challenges — solutions they can be a part of — and they become empowered to act.
